PROJECT HERMES: A Research
Proposal Jarkko Kari, csjakar@mbnet.fi During the past few decades, the amount of information that is claimed to have been obtained from beyond our world has been growing steadily, and with the Internet, at an accelerating tempo. Such knowledge might contain invaluable insights beneficent for all of humanity, and yet, science has almost totally ignored the issue thus far. In the Greek mythology, "Hermes" is the messenger of gods. Project Hermes is an international and interdisciplinary research venture focusing on information that is received from alleged spiritual or paranormal entities. The Project also examines the sources, mediators and consequences of, as well as the reasons for such communications. The main goal of the endeavour is to assess the credibility and usability of the messages. The central body of research data will comprise of supposed paranormal information on questions that are of utmost importance to mankind. This material will be systematically collected from books and articles, intermediary persons, and transcommunication devices by the Project analysts. Another major corpus will be appraisals of the information, gathered from the "messengers", the scientific community, and the general public. Project Hermes will have much to offer to the world. Besides contributing to scientific theories and methodology, it may also spark off totally novel, practical applications, as well as provide evidence that "we are not alone". Hermes was conceived in 1999, but has lain dormant until now, due to the lack of time and researchers. However, the Project will be activated at the beginning of 2002. The first year will pass with reviewing literature and planning the empirical studies. The current research scheme merely outlines the general nature of Hermes. It will be progressively specified later on, according to the participating scholars' interests. We estimate that the whole enterprise will take about five years. The Project is coordinated by Jarkko Kari (PhD) of ParaNet (Finnish Network for Scientific Research on the Paranormal). The team will apply for grants from both national and international funders.
