Overview
According to research, paranormal experiences and beliefs are remarkably common nowadays. The Finnish Network for
Scientific Research on the Paranormal, or ParaNet Finland,
was founded in August 1998. The society is a scholarly agency of
co-operation, whose purpose is to advance open-minded and critical
research on the paranormal and seminormal in Finland. In principle,
research topics covered by the network include all phenomena that lie
outside or on the outer limits of the current world-view of mainstream
science: paranormal and seminormal phenomena, experiences, information,
beliefs, activities, culture and research itself (meta-analysis). The
association does not take any a priori
stand on the existence of paranormal phenomena. The network is not
restricted to a single branch of science, but is interdisciplinary. Our
most important spheres of operations are the collecting, conducting and
publicizing of research.
ParaNet Finland is an ideologically independent and open organization for collaboration. Today, our network is a registered
association regulated by its own bylaws, and run by an executive committee. The society is officially committed to the National Advisory Board on Research Ethics guidelines Good scientific practice and
procedures for handling misconduct and fraud in science (available at http://www.pro.tsv.fi/tenk/htk.pdf). With this, ParaNet wishes to demonstrate that it
contributes to promoting and enforcing scientific principles in the practice of research work.
Anyone (even a registered community) can become a member of
ParaNet Finland, but researcher membership presupposes a university
degree. Membership in the network is totally voluntary, albeit payable.
We currently have over 90 members, mostly from Finland.
Activities
Research is conducted by some of the members in our network
Collecting and recycling research data is handled by our archive
Publishing research is mainly the responsibility of ParaNet's scholarly Web journal ParaDocs, but popular books and public events are also employed
Public events include our biennial ParaDigma conference and a national
research seminar, as well as popular lectures, discussions, and other meetings
Informing the membership and the outside world happens by means of these WWW pages, e-mail, e-mail lists, newsgroups,
brochures, posters, and advertisements
Relaying information is the primary function of this Web site and our research library
Trips to events, organizations, sights and scenes related to the paranormal are arranged sometimes
Finding new members, both academics and non-academics, is imperative to diversify and strengthen ParaNet
Awarding a prize for the best Finnish study and publication on the paranormal takes place once a year
Accepting donations is a natural source of revenue for a non-profit organization
Co-operation with other research bodies in the field is sought and practised in order to improve coordination and the
sharing of resources
